Bivouac Ground Mats: Comfort and Protection in Extreme Conditions
Essential for sleeping directly on the ground in the great outdoors, a bivouac ground mat provides insulation, comfort, and durability on all types of terrain. Whether in the forest, mountains, plains, or military terrain, it forms an effective barrier against moisture, cold, and uneven ground.
Why use a ground mat for bivouacking?
- Thermal insulation: prevents heat loss to the ground
- Sleeping comfort: cushions stones, roots, and uneven surfaces
- Sleeping bag protection: against moisture and abrasion
- Easy to carry: foldable, rollable, and ultralight depending on the model
Available mat types
- EVA foam mats: lightweight, insulating, and highly durable
- Z-Lite-style folding mats: compact and versatile
- Aluminum thermal mats: double-sided for heat reflection
- Military camo mats: tactical durability, compatible with the environment
What are they used for?
- Military bivouacking or long-term missions
- Wild camping or self-sufficient hiking
- Survival training or bushcraft
- Immersive airsoft with overnight stays in the field
Our tactical ground mats are designed to withstand abrasion, repeated folding, and varied weather conditions. Some models feature non-slip fabrics or reflective surfaces to maximize thermal efficiency.
Equip your sleep setup with a reliable, compact bivouac ground mat ready for every adventure.
What is the best ground mat for bivouacking?
The best ground mat for bivouacking depends on the weather conditions and the level of comfort desired. EVA foam mats are lightweight and durable, making them perfect for ultralight setups. Self-inflating or inflatable mattresses such as those from Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit, or Exped offer excellent comfort and good thermal insulation (high R-value).
How do you insulate yourself from the ground while bivouacking?
To effectively insulate yourself from the ground while bivouacking, use a ground mat with a good R-value (thermal resistance), combined if necessary with an emergency blanket, a tarp, or natural materials (leaves and branches). The goal is to prevent heat loss through conduction to the cold, damp ground.
What should you put under a tent?
A protective ground mat, also called a “footprint,” is generally placed under a tent. It protects the bottom of the tent from abrasion, moisture, and sharp objects. It is recommended to choose a model suited to the shape of the tent and slightly smaller to prevent water from seeping underneath.
What is the purpose of a ground mat?
A ground mat has two roles: it thermally insulates the sleeper from the cold ground and provides comfort by cushioning uneven terrain. It also helps extend the life of your gear by protecting the tent or sleeping bag from moisture and abrasion.
